RENEWing Educational Outreach

Recently, Heartland Sings’ Vocal Artists went to Southside High School in Fort Wayne to perform a selection from our program honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., alongside Rev. Dr. Bill McGill and Heartland’s own Maestro Robert Nance. The Vocal Artists also demonstrated for the Fort Wayne Community Schools principals how they teach students about the expressive depth and cultural history of opera and jazz.

That's just one step in how Heartland educates hundreds of students at schools each year about the vocal arts. But the first step is having the resources to prepare for these programs, and that step starts with you, our donors!

Heartland’s educational programs reach vocal arts students of many ages and backgrounds who might not otherwise have the opportunity to work with professional musicians inside or outside the classroom.  Our programs include:

  • Side-by-Side: In this program, we work with individual students and choirs alike to prepare students for auditions and choral concerts.  The Young Singer Choral Festival developed from Side-by-Side in partnership with the Fort Wayne Children’s Choir, and today it includes choirs from high schools across Northeast Indiana.

  • Everybody Sing: Heartland singers perform a variety of genres for K-8 students and teach them about how musical elements convey meaning and allow for emotional interpretation.  Students are invited to sing along as they learn from our Vocal Artists.

In addition to these educational programs, Heartland offers free community concerts such as:

  • "Hate No More: Just Sing", a unique program about uniting divided communities in song

  • "We Are the Dream: A Tribute to MLK, Jr.", a dramatic tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  • "Freedom on Main: An All-American Family Celebration," in celebration of the Fourth of July

Thanks to your generous donations, we’ll soon be able to expand our reach into the community through our first Vocal Arts Institute this summer. The Vocal Arts Institute is a tuition-free, two-week program designed to comprehensively teach young singers about the vocal arts in which students will participate in voice lessons, masterclasses, cross-genre training, mock auditions, movement, and information sessions on topics ranging from diction to vocal anatomy.

If you haven’t made your contribution to the RENEW spring match campaign, there’s still time!  Just go to HeartlandSings.org/Donate to make a doubled contribution to vocal arts and musical education today.
